The artist Judith Supine made some headlines this past week after unmasking and pulling some antics that started a media frenzy. The artist did an interview at Mecka Gallery last week and spoke about his new gallery show, “Golden Child” and the fact that he will no longer hide his face from the public. Many fans of Judith Supine had never seen his face and did not know that he was a man, as the artist chose to use his mother’s name for his art. The questionable name is suitable, as Supine often creates pieces that speak of gender combination.
Bridge Stunt and Video
The most newsworthy stunt of the week from Supine came when he climbed a New York City bridge to place a huge sculpture. The artwork depicts a woman staring ahead while smoking a cigarette, and is done in Supine’s trademark fluorescents.
Supine had a video done of himself performing the bold act and placed the video online. While it is not the first time that Supine recorded himself climbing a bridge to install artwork, the timing was poor, after the recent trespassers at the World Trade Center. Many critics responded with alarm to the video, wondering about the security of the bridge. The stunt brought a bit of publicity, with Fox 5 asking for an interview with Supine on “Good Day New York”. For better or worse, Judith Supine is certainly making a name for himself this week.
