Jose Vergara is a young artist that is most well known for his incredibly detailed depictions of eyes. Vergara was raised in Madrid and born in Mexico City, and he now resides in Texas. Labeled a hyperrealist, Vergara’s chosen medium for his artistic expression is colored pencils.
Why the Eyes?
The talented 19-year-old explains “I’ve always loved to work with details and drawing eyes seemed the perfect challenge to test this new discovery, not only for their beauty but also for their meaning.” Vergara does not create similar works repetitively, though, the eyes different greatly from one to the next. Some eyes are super realistic, and seem straight out of a photograph, while others are comical, portraying fictional characters. Some eyes have lashes and brows, and perhaps even bags or dark circles, while others are bare without even a lid. Eyes are not the only inspiration for Vergara’s painting, but they are what he is most known for.
Vergara cites role models such as J.R.R. Tolkien, Nelson Mandela, and Aristotle, saying that these individuals were masters in the art of living. With such deep and varied inspiration, it is no wonder that Vergaras chose the windows to the soul as his initial introduction to the world.
For the future, Vergaras explains “I plan to pursue a path in which I’ll be able to combine the heart and soul of hyperrealism and traditional art with the fun and exciting world of caricatures and graffiti where everything is possible.” We look forward to seeing what this young and talented professional will come out with next.
