A flock of birds was photographed on several telephone wires, and the arrangement reminded Agnelli of music notes. The similarity sparked Agnelli’s curiosity; he wanted to know what music would sound like if it followed the score formed by the birds in the photograph.
Music and Video Creation
Agnelli took his idea to the Apple Logic Studio and used Adobe After Effects to create a delightful video to go along with the music. The video shows the birds turn into music notes, and Agnelli used the positioning of the birds to determine the rhythm. Agnelli actually cut the photograph out of the newspaper for the project. The instruments used to create the sounds were an oboe, xylophone, clarinet, and bassoon.
The resulting sound is whimsical and dreamlike. Agnelli was humble when asked about the piece, declaring that “The pleasing melody is not my invention. It was the birds’ idea.” Agnelli also said that he didn’t feel it was the most original idea, he simply wanted to see what it would sound like. Fans have praised the work done by Agnelli on Birds on the Wires, taking heart in his method as well as the beauty of the piece. Many have seen it as a call to look for patterns and inspiration in ordinary places. How do you feel about “Birds on the Wires”?
